EzGro Backyard Garden
The EzGro Backyard Vertical Garden system is the ideal choice for anyone who wants to grow the equivalent (or more) produce that a medium to large size soil garden would yield. Regardless of the backyard garden size you choose, you will be able to produce 6 to 8 times as much per square foot as you could in a field garden, and 3 to 4 times as much as you would using a greenhouse bench system.
What You Will Need
In order to set up your EzGro Backyard Garden, you will need a cleared, leveled plot of land that gets ample sun, a 3 or 4 plug electrical outlet, and a water source. We recommend that you cover the site in durable landscape fabric to suppress weed growth in the area, though you could also use mulch if you prefer. Choose a site that is far enough from shade trees that it is not in shadow during most daylight hours. You will also need a large drum to hold the nutrient-enriched water that will be pumped to the plants. For 10 tower systems, a 50 gallon drum can be used, but for 30+ tower systems we recommend a 300 gallon tote in order to limit the frequency of mixing the nutrients with the water. Considering that each tower uses 1 gallon of water per day, the nutrients for a 30 tower system would have to be mixed daily in a 50 gallon drum, but only every 10 days in a 300 gallon reservoir.
The basic unit kit of the EzGro Backyard Garden is a 10 tower system. We also offer a 30 tower kit and a 60 tower kit. If you prefer any size in between, it’s easy to customize your system using our 10 tower expansion kits. The opportunities for customization within the kits are almost endless- the examples given here are taken from some typical garden plans that are in place, but the size and shape of an individual garden is entirely flexible to your needs. The chart below shows the requirements and output for 10, 30, and 60 tower systems, and you can use the 10 tower information to calculate the sizes not listed.
Number of Towers |
Min SqFt of space |
Number of plants |
Water usage per day |
10 | 450 | 250 | 10-15 gallons |
30 | 900 | 600 | 30-50 gallons |
60 | 1800 | 1200 | 60-90 gallons |
Keep in mind that the number of plants and water required is only an average- depending on what plants you choose, the individual towers will hold from 2-7 Quad Pots, which hold 4 plants per pot, so these numbers are based on an average of 5 pots per tower.
What You Can Grow
The EzGro System was originally designed to grow strawberries, so naturally, they thrive in it. But so many other plants grow happily and produce heartily in the EzGro Backyard Garden that it’s hard to list the all. Among the top producers are:
All flowers, all herbs, tomatoes, beans, peppers, eggplant, swiss chard, beets, baby carrots, okra, kale, lettuces, spinach, melons, peas, cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and brussels sprouts and more.
How It Works
The EzGro Backyard Garden system is designed to maximize your growing potential by combining the space-efficiency of vertical gardening with the technology of a customized hydroponic system. In any of the EzGro Backyard Garden models, the towers are constructed of sturdy conduit, which our stacking Quad Pots are slid onto. The towers are connected at the top and bottom to form a stable interlocking stack. Black poly drip-line is strung at the top of the system to provide the nutrient-enhanced water to the top Quad Pots in the system at timed intervals, so the plants receive just as much as they need. The solution then drips down through the lower Quad Pots, and any unused solution is then collected back into the reservoir for re-use, completely avoiding waste. For more information on strawberries follow me.
The base 10 tower EzGro Backyard Garden sells for approximately $1500, with slight price differences occurring based on the requirements of your specific set-up. The 10 tower Garden includes the Quad Pots, PVC, couplings, drip line, pump, timer, growing medium and ample nutrients to last one full growing season. The expansion kits in increments of 10 towers are approximately $150 per tower, depending on how may Quad Pots per tower you will be using.
